Connection is the antidote to shame from "summary" of Daring Greatly by Brené Brown
Shame, as I've come to understand it, is the intensely painful feeling that we are unworthy of love and belonging. It's the fear that something we've done or failed to do makes us unacceptable and unworthy of connection. Shame is a universal experience - we all have it. And the more we deny it, the more power it has over us. The antidote to shame, as I've discovered through my research, is connection. When we share our shame with someone who responds with empathy and understanding, shame loses its power over us. It's in the telling of our stories that we find healing and freedom from shame. Connection allows us to realize that we are not alone in our struggles, that others have experienced similar feelings of shame and vulnerability. In a culture that often promotes the idea of perfectionism and self-sufficiency, it can be difficult to open up and be vulnerable. But it's through vulnerability that we truly connect with others and build meaningful relationships. When we allow ourselves to be seen as we truly are, flaws and all, we create opportunities for genuine connection and understanding. In order to cultivate connection and combat shame, we must first be willing to be vulnerable. We must be willing to let go of our defenses and share our true selves with others. It's through this openness and honesty that we can truly connect with others and build relationships based on trust and authenticity. So, the next time you feel shame creeping in, remember that connection is the antidote. Reach out to someone you trust, share your story, and allow yourself to be seen and heard. It's through this act of vulnerability and connection that we can truly overcome shame and cultivate a sense of belonging and acceptance.Similar Posts
