Resentment can be toxic from "summary" of Dare to Forgive by Edward M. Hallowell

Resentment, that smoldering fire of anger that burns within us, can indeed be toxic. It can slowly poison our minds and hearts, clouding our judgment and distorting our perceptions. When we hold onto resentment, we are essentially holding onto pain and anger, allowing them to fester and grow. This negativity can seep into every aspect of our lives, affecting our relationships, our work, and our overall well-being. The longer we harbor resentment, the more deeply ingrained it becomes in our psyche. It can become a constant companion, coloring our thoughts and reactions in ways we may not even realize. This toxicity can manifest itself physically as well, leading to stress, anxiety, and even physical ailments. Resentment can consume us, draining our energy and sapping our joy. Moreover, resentment can also create a cycle of negativity. When we hold onto resentment, we are more likely to perceive slights and offenses where none may exist. This can lead to a self-reinforcing pattern of anger and bitterness, pushing away those around us and isolating ourselves further. In this way, resentment can become a barrier to forgiveness, trapping us in a cycle of pain and negativity. To break free from the grip of resentment, we must acknowledge its power over us. We must recognize the ways in which it poisons our thoughts and emotions, and actively work to release it. This may involve confronting the source of our resentment, whether through communication, therapy, or other means. It may also require a shift in perspective, a willingness to let go of the hurt and anger that we have been holding onto.
  1. We can begin to heal ourselves and open the door to forgiveness. By releasing resentment, we create space for empathy, compassion, and understanding. We free ourselves from the burden of carrying around past grievances, and allow ourselves to move forward with a lighter heart and a clearer mind. In the end, by letting go of resentment, we ultimately free ourselves.
