Our brains are not equipped to handle the constant barrage of stimuli from "summary" of CrazyBusy by Edward M. Hallowell

Our brains, marvelous though they may be, have not evolved as quickly as the technology that now inundates them. The brain is a slow learner, and it still operates much as it did when we roamed the savannahs in search of food. It is not built for the fifty-to-sixty-hour work weeks that have become the norm in high-tech companies. Nor is it built for the incessant ping of emails, text messages, and social media notifications that demand our attention at all hours of the day. Our brains are wired to respond to novelty, which is why we are so easily distracted by the constant stream of information that bombards us. Every new email, text message, or social media update triggers a release of dopamine in the brain, giving us a small burst of pleasure. This reward system is what keeps us coming back for more, even when we know we should be focusing on more important tasks. The problem is that our brains have not evolved to handle this constant barrage of stimuli. The prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for decision-making and impulse control, can only handle so much information at once. When it is overwhelmed, we become forgetful, irritable, and unable to concentrate. We make mistakes, miss deadlines, and drop the ball on important projects. In order to combat this cognitive overload, we need to take a step back and reassess our priorities. We need to set boundaries around our work and personal lives, and learn to say no to the constant demands for our attention. We need to carve out time for deep focus, where we can work on important tasks without interruption. And we need to give our brains the rest and relaxation they need to recharge, so that we can come back to our work with renewed energy and focus.
