They exploit resources for corporate gain from "summary" of Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, 3rd Edition by John Perkins

The powerful corporate interests that I worked for had a singular goal in mind: to extract valuable resources from developing countries at any cost. They did not care about the well-being of the local populations or the long-term impact on the environment. Their only concern was maximizing profits and expanding their influence around the globe. In order to achieve their objectives, these corporations employed a variety of underhanded tactics, including bribery, manipulation, and deception. They would cozy up to corrupt government officials and offer them lucrative deals in exchange for access to the country's resources. This allowed them to exploit these resources without facing any significant opposition. I was often tasked with convincing these countries to take out large loans from international organizations like the World Bank and the IMF. These loans were not intended to benefit the people of these nations; instead, they served as a means of trapping them in a cycle of debt and dependency. Once these countries were saddled with debt, the corporations could swoop in and dictate the terms of their resource extraction. The consequences of this ruthless exploitation were devastating. Local communities were displaced, ecosystems were destroyed, and future generations were left to deal with the environmental fallout. Meanwhile, the profits generated from these activities lined the pockets of a select few at the expense of the many. It became clear to me that the system was fundamentally flawed and inherently unjust. The exploitation of resources for corporate gain was not only morally reprehensible but also unsustainable in the long run. If we continue down this path, we risk irreparably damaging our planet and perpetuating a cycle of poverty and oppression. It is essential that we acknowledge these injustices and work towards creating a more equitable and sustainable global economy.
