Independence is necessary for success from "summary" of Common Sense by Thomas Paine

Independence, in the grand scheme of things, is crucial to achieving success. Without independence, one is constantly subject to the whims and desires of others, unable to make decisions for themselves or pursue their own interests. As Thomas Paine so eloquently argues in 'Common Sense', a state of dependency on others is a hindrance to personal growth and prosperity. Paine believed that true success could only be achieved through self-reliance and independence. He saw dependence on others, particularly on a distant and tyrannical government, as a barrier to individual liberty and progress. In his view, it was essential for individuals to break free from such constraints in order to realize their full potential. Independence, according to Paine, not only empowers individuals to make their own choices but also inspires innovation and creativity. When people are free to think and act for themselves, they are more likely to take risks, explore new ideas, and push the boundaries of what is possible. This spirit of independence fuels progress and drives societies forward. Moreover, Paine believed that independence was not just a personal virtue but a collective one as well. He argued that nations too must strive for independence in order to thrive and prosper. A nation that is beholden to another, whether politically, economically, or culturally, cannot truly claim to be successful or sovereign.
  1. Paine's message in 'Common Sense' is clear: independence is a prerequisite for success, both at the individual and national level. Without the freedom to think, act, and govern oneself, true progress and prosperity will remain elusive. It is only by breaking free from the chains of dependency that individuals and nations can truly achieve greatness and fulfill their potential.
