Societies collapse due to environmental damage from "summary" of Collapse by Jared M. Diamond

Throughout history, societies have risen and fallen, with one common factor often being environmental damage. When a society overexploits its natural resources, it sets itself on a path towards collapse. This can manifest in various ways, such as deforestation, soil erosion, or the depletion of critical resources like water or minerals. One example of this can be seen in the case of the Easter Islanders. Once a thriving civilization, the inhabitants of Easter Island deforested the land to the point where they could no longer sustain their way of life. This led to a collapse in their society, as they were unable to access the resources they needed to survive. Similarly, the Anasazi people of the American Southwest also fell victim to environmental damage. Through unsustainable agricultural practices, they depleted the soil and water sources in their region, leading to a collapse of their society. Without the resources necessary to support themselves, the Anasazi were forced to abandon their settlements and disperse. In both of these cases, and many others throughout history, societies have collapsed due to their inability to maintain a sustainable relationship with their environment. When a society fails to consider the long-term consequences of its actions, it risks facing a catastrophic collapse. It is essential for societies to prioritize environmental stewardship and sustainable practices in order to avoid a similar fate.
