We cannot fully understand God's reasons for election from "summary" of Chosen by God by R. C. Sproul

The concept of God's election is a difficult pill for many to swallow. It is not uncommon for people to struggle with the idea that God chooses some for salvation while passing over others. The question that naturally arises is, why does God choose some and not others? This is a question that has plagued theologians for centuries, and the truth is, we cannot fully understand God's reasons for election. Some may argue that God chooses people based on their foreseen faith or good works. However, this view undermines the sovereignty of God and places the ultimate decision in the hands of man. If God's choice is contingent on something in us, then God is not truly free to choose whom He wills. This view also fails to take into account the biblical teaching on the depravity of man and the fallen state of humanity. Others may argue that God chooses people based on His foreknowledge of their future decisions. However, this view still places the ultimate decision in the hands of man and undermines God's sovereignty. If God's choice is based on what He sees we will do in the future, then once again, God is not truly free to choose whom He wills.
  1. The Bible teaches that God's election is based solely on His own sovereign will and purpose. As Paul writes in Romans 9:16, "So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy." God's election is a mystery that we may never fully understand this side of eternity. We must trust in the goodness and wisdom of God, knowing that His ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts higher than our thoughts.
