Intermolecular forces determine the physical properties of substances from "summary" of Chemistry by Russell Kuhtz

Intermolecular forces are interactions that occur between molecules. These forces determine many of the physical properties of substances. For instance, the boiling point of a substance is determined by the strength of the intermolecular forces present. Substances with stronger intermolecular forces will have higher boiling points because more energy is required to overcome these forces and change the substance from a liquid to a gas. Similarly, the melting point of a substance is also influenced by intermolecular forces. Substances with stronger intermolecular forces will have higher melting points because more energy is needed to overcome these forces and change the substance from a solid to a liquid. In contrast, substances with weaker intermolecular forces will have lower melting points because less energy is required to break these forces and change the substance from a solid to a liquid. Moreover, intermolecular forces also affect the viscosity of a substance. Viscosity is a measure of a substance's resistance to flow. Substances with stronger intermolecular forces tend to have higher viscosities because the molecules are more strongly attracted to each other and move more slowly past one another. On the other hand, substances with weaker intermolecular forces have lower viscosities because the molecules are less attracted to each other and move more freely. Additionally, intermolecular forces play a role in determining the solubility of substances. Substances with similar intermolecular forces are more likely to dissolve in each other because the forces between the molecules in the two substances are similar in strength. Conversely, substances with different intermolecular forces are less likely to dissolve in each other because the forces between the molecules in the two substances are not well-matched.
  1. Intermolecular forces are crucial in determining the physical properties of substances. These forces influence properties such as boiling point, melting point, viscosity, and solubility. Understanding the role of intermolecular forces can help us predict and explain the behavior of substances in different conditions.
