Chronic stress can damage the brain from "summary" of Change Your Brain, Change Your Life: Revised and Expanded Edition by Daniel G. Amen

Chronic stress is a silent but powerful enemy that can wreak havoc on the brain. When we are under constant stress, our body releases hormones like cortisol that can be toxic to the brain over time. This prolonged exposure to stress hormones can lead to a variety of negative effects on the brain, including shrinking of the prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for decision-making, impulse control, and judgment. Furthermore, chronic stress can also affect the hippocampus, a region crucial for memory and learning. Research has shown that chronic stress can actually cause the hippocampus to shrink, which can impair our ability to form new memories and retain information. This is why people who are under chronic stress often experience forgetfulness and cognitive decline. In addition to these structural changes, chronic stress can also alter the way our brain functions. It can disrupt the communication between different regions of the brain, leading to issues with mood regulation, emotional control, and stress management. This can result in mood disorders like depression and anxiety, as well as an increased risk of developing conditions like PTSD. Moreover, chronic stress can also make the brain more susceptible to damage from other sources, such as toxins, infections, and injuries. When the brain is already weakened by chronic stress, it is less able to defend itself against these external threats, making it more vulnerable to long-term damage.
  1. The impact of chronic stress on the brain is significant and far-reaching. It is important to recognize the signs of chronic stress and take steps to manage it effectively in order to protect our brain health in the long run. By reducing stress levels and adopting healthy coping mechanisms, we can mitigate the damage that chronic stress can inflict on our brains and improve our overall well-being.
