Caste shapes perceptions and attitudes towards different groups from "summary" of Caste by Isabel Wilkerson

The hierarchy of caste is not just about the way we are seen by others; it is the lens through which we see ourselves. Caste shapes our perceptions and attitudes towards different groups, influencing our interactions and relationships with those deemed inferior or superior. It is a system deeply ingrained in our society, dictating who we associate with, who we look down upon, and who we aspire to be. From a young age, we are socialized to understand our place within the caste system. We are taught to respect those above us and to look down upon those below us. These attitudes become internalized, shaping our thoughts and behaviors without us even realizing it. We may not consciously discriminate against others based on their caste, but our subconscious biases can still influence our actions in subtle ways. Caste also affects how we interpret the world around us. Our perceptions are filtered through the lens of caste, leading us to make assumptions and judgments based on someone's social status rather than their individual merits. We may overlook the talents and abilities of those from lower castes, dismissing them as unworthy of our attention. Conversely, we may hold those from higher castes to a higher standard, assuming they are more competent and deserving of success. These ingrained perceptions and attitudes can have far-reaching consequences, perpetuating inequality and discrimination across generations. By reinforcing the notion of superiority and inferiority based on caste, we perpetuate a system of oppression that limits the potential of individuals and communities. Only by recognizing and challenging these deep-seated beliefs can we begin to dismantle the caste system and create a more equitable society for all.
