Humans are born to run long distances from "summary" of Born to Run by Christopher McDougall

It's easy to believe that we, as humans, are designed for one thing: running. Not just any running, but running long distances. For centuries, our ancestors relied on this ability to chase down prey and outlast them in the blistering heat. Our bodies are equipped with features that make us perfect for this task. Our Achilles tendons, for example, are like springs, storing and releasing energy with each step. Our big toes are longer than those of other primates, giving us better balance and propulsion. But what sets us apart the most is our ability to regulate body temperature. Other animals, like dogs, can only pant to cool down. We, on the other hand, sweat profusely, allowing us to run for hours on end without overheating. This remarkable ability to endure long distances is what has allowed us to dominate the animal kingdom. We may not be the fastest creatures on Earth, but we are certainly the most persistent. In modern society, however, we seem to have forgotten this innate ability. We are bombarded with messages telling us to sit still, to take it easy, to avoid exerting ourselves. We are encouraged to drive everywhere, to take the elevator instead of the stairs, to sit at a desk all day. But deep down, our bodies are screaming for movement, for the open road, for the feeling of wind in our hair. It's time to reconnect with our primal roots, to embrace the fact that we are born to run. We don't need fancy shoes or high-tech gear to do it. All we need is the will to push ourselves, to test our limits, to see just how far we can go. So lace up your sneakers, step out the door, and let your legs carry you to places you never thought possible. You may just discover that the key to happiness lies in the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other.
