Growing up in apartheid-era South Africa, I learned early on that humor was not just a tool for survival, but a way to build connections with others who were going through the same struggles. In the face of adversity, laughter became a form of resistance, a way to reclaim our humanity in the face of a system that sought to dehumanize us. My mother, a fiercely independent and strong-willed woman, taught me that sometimes the only way to cope with the absurdity of life is to laugh at it.
