The nature of the self from "summary" of Bhagavad Gita by Stephen Mitchell

The self is the essence of who we are, beyond the physical body and the mind. It is our true nature, our innermost being that is eternal and unchanging. According to the Bhagavad Gita, the self is distinct from the body, which is temporary and subject to birth and death. The self is indestructible, timeless, and unaffected by the ups and downs of life. The self is described as being beyond the five senses, beyond the mind, and beyond the intellect. It is the witness of all experiences, the silent observer that remains unchanged amidst the changing circumstances of life. The self is pure consciousness, pure awareness, and pure existence. It is not limited by time, space, or form. The self is described as being part of the ultimate reality, the divine essence that permeates all of creation. It is the spark of the divine within each individual, the source of all love, wisdom, and power. The self is connected to the universal consciousness, the cosmic intelligence that governs the universe. The self is described as being the source of peace, joy, and fulfillment. When we connect with our true self, we experience a sense of wholeness and completeness that transcends any external circumstances. We realize that we are not separate from the world around us, but rather a part of the interconnected web of life. The self is described as being beyond the ego, the false sense of identity that separates us from others. When we identify with the self, we transcend the limitations of the ego and experience a sense of oneness with all beings. We see ourselves in others, and others in ourselves, realizing that we are all connected in the divine tapestry of existence.
  1. The highest realization that one can attain. By knowing the self, one transcends the cycle of birth and death, and attains liberation from the endless cycle of suffering. The self is the key to true happiness, true peace, and true fulfillment. It is the essence of who we are, and the source of all that is good and beautiful in the world.
