Letting go of attachment from "summary" of Bhagavad Gita by Stephen Mitchell

The concept of letting go of attachment is a central theme in the Bhagavad Gita. Krishna teaches Arjuna that attachment to the results of our actions leads to suffering. When we are attached to outcomes, we are not truly present in the moment. We are either dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. This attachment prevents us from experiencing life fully and hinders our spiritual growth. By letting go of attachment, we free ourselves from the chains of desire and expectation. We learn to accept whatever comes our way with equanimity. This does not mean that we become passive or indifferent. It means that we act without being attached to the fruits of our actions. We do our best and leave the rest to the divine will. This attitude allows us to act with clarity and focus, without being burdened by the fear of failure or the desire for success. Krishna encourages Arjuna to perform his duty without attachment to the results. He tells him that it is better to fail in one's own duty than to succeed in the duty of another. When we let go of attachment, we can act with integrity and authenticity. We are not swayed by external circumstances or the opinions of others. We act from a place of inner strength and conviction. Letting go of attachment is not easy. It requires self-awareness and mindfulness. We must observe our thoughts and emotions without getting caught up in them. We must cultivate a sense of detachment while still being fully engaged in the world. This is the key to finding inner peace and contentment. As Krishna says to Arjuna, "You have the right to perform your prescribed duties, but you are not entitled to the fruits of your actions." By letting go of attachment, we can live in the present moment and experience life in its fullness. We can act with love and compassion, without being weighed down by expectations or judgments. This is the path to true freedom and liberation.
