Morality should not be based on fear or coercion from "summary" of Beyond Good & Evil by Friedrich Nietzsche
Morality cannot be built on fear or coercion, for such a foundation is weak and ultimately unsustainable. When individuals are made to adhere to a certain moral code out of fear of punishment or the threat of coercion, they are not truly embracing that morality. Instead, they are merely following orders, devoid of any genuine understanding or belief in the principles they are meant to uphold. True morality must come from within, from a place of genuine conviction and understanding. It cannot be imposed from the outside through threats or manipulation. To base morality on fear is to deny individuals the opportunity to develop their own sense of right and wrong, to think critically about their actions, and to make choices based on their own values and beliefs. Coercion, too, is a poor foundation for morality. When individuals are forced to behave in a certain way against their will, they are not truly acting morally. Instead, they are simply conforming to external pressures, devoid of any real agency or autonomy. Morality that is based on coercion is brittle and easily shattered, for it lacks the internal strength and conviction that is necessary for true moral action. Rather than instilling fear or resorting to coercion, true morality should be based on understanding, compassion, and a genuine desire to do what is right. It should come from a place of inner conviction and personal reflection, not from external threats or manipulation. Only when individuals are free to make their own choices, guided by their own moral compass, can true morality flourish and endure.Similar Posts
