Misinterpretation and manipulation of morality can lead to societal decay from "summary" of Beyond Good & Evil by Friedrich Nietzsche

When society deludes itself into believing that morality is an absolute and unchanging concept, it opens the door to manipulation and decay. Morality is not a fixed set of rules handed down from above; it is a fluid, evolving concept that reflects the values and beliefs of a particular society at a particular time. When individuals or groups attempt to impose their own narrow interpretation of morality on others, they inevitably distort and corrupt its true meaning. This distortion of morality can take many forms. It can manifest as self-righteousness, a smug certainty in one's own moral superiority that blinds one to the complexities and nuances of ethical decision-making. It can also appear as hypocrisy, a willingness to bend or break the very moral rules one claims to uphold in the service of personal gain or power.
