Authenticity involves embracing one's finitude from "summary" of Being and Time by Martin Heidegger
Authenticity involves embracing one's finitude, which implies a recognition of one's inherent limitations as a human being. This fundamental aspect of human existence is often overlooked or denied in favor of a pursuit of grandeur and immortality. However, Heidegger argues that true authenticity can only be achieved by confronting and accepting the reality of our finite nature. By acknowledging our finitude, we come to terms with the fact that our existence is marked by limitation, impermanence, and mortality. This awareness forces us to confront the inevitability of death, which serves as a powerful reminder of the fragility and temporality of our existence. In doing so, we are confronted with the urgency of living authentically in the present moment, rather than being consumed by concerns about the past or future. Embracing one's finitude also entails a rejection of the tendency to escape or transcend our limitations through inauthentic modes of being. This includes the pursuit of superficial forms of fulfillment, such as material possessions, social status, or fleeting pleasures, which ultimately fail to provide a lasting sense of meaning or purpose. Instead, authenticity requires us to confront the reality of our mortality and embrace the full range of human experience, including suffering, anxiety, and uncertainty. In accepting our finitude, we are challenged to take responsibility for our choices and actions, recognizing that our existence is shaped by the decisions we make in the face of our limitations. This entails a willingness to confront the anxiety and uncertainty that arises from the recognition of our own mortality, and to make choices that are in alignment with our authentic self.- Embracing one's finitude is not a limitation but rather a liberation, as it opens up the possibility of living a life that is true to oneself and grounded in an authentic understanding of one's place in the world. It is through this confrontation with our finitude that we are able to transcend the illusions of immortality and embrace the fullness of our existence as finite beings.
