Alienation arises from societal expectations from "summary" of Being and Nothingness by Jean-Paul Sartre
In the eyes of society, we are defined by the roles we play and the expectations we must meet. We are expected to conform to certain norms and values, to fit into predefined categories and fulfill prescribed duties. This pressure to conform can lead to a sense of alienation, a feeling of being disconnected from our true selves and our own desires. We become trapped in a web of expectations, losing touch with our authentic selves in the process. Society's expectations act as a form of external constraint, imposing limitations on our freedom and autonomy. We are told how to behave, what to believe, and who to be, leaving little room for individual expression or self-discovery. This external imposition creates a sense of estrangement from ourselves, as we struggle to reconcile our own desires with the demands of society. The pressure to meet societal expectations can also lead to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. We may internalize the values and judgments of others, measuring our worth against external standards of success and happiness. In doing so, we lose sight of our own inner compass, relying instead on external validation to define our sense of self-worth.- Alienation arises from the gap between who we are expected to be and who we truly are. We are torn between the demands of society and the call of our own authenticity, caught in a constant struggle to find balance between the two. Only by recognizing and challenging societal expectations can we begin to reclaim our sense of self and break free from the chains of alienation.
