Tibial nerve supplies muscles of the posterior leg from "summary" of Bd Chaurasia's Human Anatomy, Volumes 3 & 4 by B. D. Chaurasia

The tibial nerve is a significant nerve in the human body that plays a crucial role in supplying muscles located in the posterior leg. This nerve originates from the sciatic nerve, which is the largest nerve in the body. The tibial nerve emerges from the posterior compartment of the thigh and descends into the leg along with the popliteal vessels. As it travels downwards, it gives off branches that supply various muscles in the posterior leg region. One of the major muscles supplied by the tibial nerve is the gastrocnemius muscle, which is the largest muscle in the calf region. This muscle plays a vital role in activities such as walking, running, and jumping. The tibial nerve also supplies the soleus muscle, which lies deep to the gastrocnemius muscle and aids in plantarflexion of the foot. These two muscles work together to provide strength and stability to the ankle joint. In addition to the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles, the tibial nerve also supplies the muscles of the deep posterior compartment of the leg. These muscles include the tibialis posterior, flexor digitorum longus, and flexor hallucis longus. The tibialis posterior muscle helps in inversion and plantarflexion of the foot, while the flexor digitorum longus and flexor hallucis longus muscles aid in flexing the toes and big toe, respectively.
  1. The tibial nerve plays a crucial role in supplying the muscles of the posterior leg, which are essential for various movements and functions of the lower limb. Understanding the innervation of these muscles is crucial for healthcare professionals to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the tibial nerve and its associated muscles.
