Lymphatics drain excess fluid and waste products from "summary" of Bd Chaurasia's Human Anatomy, Volumes 3 & 4 by B. D. Chaurasia
The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in maintaining fluid balance within the body. It consists of a network of lymphatic vessels that transport lymph, a clear fluid containing white blood cells, proteins, and cellular waste products. Lymphatic vessels are present throughout the body, running parallel to blood vessels and draining excess fluid from the interstitial spaces between cells. The primary function of the lymphatic system is to drain this excess fluid, known as lymph, back into the bloodstream. This helps to prevent the accumulation of fluid in the tissues, which can lead to swelling and edema. In addition to fluid balance, the lymphatic system also plays a key role in immune function, as lymph contains white blood cells that help to fight off infections and disease. In addition to draining excess fluid, the lymphatic system also helps to remove waste products from the body. As lymph circulates through the lymphatic vessels, it picks up cellular waste products and other debris, such as dead cells, bacteria, and toxins. These waste products are then filtered out by lymph nodes, small bean-shaped structures that are found along the lymphatic vessels. The lymph nodes contain specialized immune cells that help to trap and destroy bacteria, viruses, and other harmful substances. In this way, the lymphatic system helps to protect the body from infection and disease. Once the waste products have been filtered out by the lymph nodes, the lymph is returned to the bloodstream, where it can be filtered by the kidneys and excreted from the body as urine.- The lymphatic system plays a vital role in maintaining the body's internal environment by draining excess fluid and waste products from the tissues. By doing so, it helps to prevent swelling, edema, and the buildup of harmful substances that can lead to infection and disease.
