Material possessions do not bring lasting happiness from "summary" of Autobiography of a Yogi (Unabridged Edition) by Paramhansa Yogananda
In my journey of self-discovery, I have come to realize the fleeting nature of material possessions. The pursuit of wealth and possessions may bring temporary pleasure and comfort, but they do not provide lasting happiness. I have witnessed individuals who possess great wealth and abundance, yet they are still plagued by discontent and a sense of emptiness within. I recall the story of a wealthy man I encountered during my travels. He lived in a lavish mansion filled with expensive belongings, yet he appeared restless and dissatisfied. Despite his material wealth, he lacked inner peace and contentment. This experience served as a powerful reminder that true happiness cannot be found in the accumulation of material possessions. Material possessions are external and transient in nature, subject to loss and decay. In contrast, true happiness stems from within, from cultivating virtues such as love, compassion, and gratitude. These qualities are the foundation of lasting joy and fulfillment, transcending the impermanence of material wealth. Throughout my spiritual journey, I have met many individuals who have renounced worldly possessions in search of deeper meaning and purpose. By letting go of attachment to material wealth, they have found a profound sense of peace and contentment that far exceeds the fleeting pleasures of materialism.- In nurturing the soul and connecting with the divine essence within. Material possessions may provide temporary comfort and convenience, but they pale in comparison to the eternal bliss that comes from spiritual awakening. It is through this realization that I have come to understand the futility of seeking lasting happiness in material possessions.
