Habits shape your identity and vice versa from "summary" of Atomic Habits: Perubahan Kecil yang memberikan hasil luar biasa by James Clear
Our habits shape our identity. The way we consistently behave forms the person we become. Every action we take is like a vote for the type of person we want to be. Small habits may seem insignificant at first, but they accumulate into our identity over time. Our daily choices compound into our ultimate outcomes. For example, if you make your bed every morning, you are casting a vote for being a clean and organized person. If you write a page each day, you are casting a vote for being a writer. Your habits are the channel through which you become the type of person you wish to be. On the other hand, our identity also shapes our habits. The beliefs we hold about ourselves can either encourage or discourage certain behaviors. People with a fixed mindset may not believe they can change, so they don't even try. They are stuck in their current habits because they identify with their past selves. Conversely, people with a growth mindset believe they can improve, so they are more likely to adopt new habits that align with their desired identity. In essence, our habits are a reflection of the way we see ourselves. In order to change our habits, we must first change our identity. We cannot rely solely on willpower or motivation to sustain new behaviors. We must shift our perception of ourselves in order to make lasting changes. By focusing on the type of person we wish to become, we can align our habits with that vision. For example, if you want to become a healthier person, you must start by identifying as a healthy person. This will make it easier to adopt habits such as exercising regularly and eating nutritious foods. When our habits are in line with our identity, change becomes effortless.- Our habits and our identity are deeply intertwined. They are two sides of the same coin, each influencing the other in a continuous feedback loop. By understanding this relationship, we can take control of our habits and shape the person we want to become. Our daily choices may seem small, but they have the power to transform our lives over time. If we want to change our outcomes, we must start by changing our habits. By doing so, we can cultivate the identity we desire and create a life filled with purpose and fulfillment.
