Speciesism is unjustifiable discrimination from "summary" of Animal Liberation by Peter Singer

When we consider the principle of equality, we must not limit it to only certain groups based on arbitrary characteristics such as race or gender. To be consistent in our application of this principle, we must also extend it to all beings who have the capacity to suffer. This includes non-human animals who are sentient beings capable of experiencing pain and pleasure. Speciesism, the belief that one species is superior to others simply based on species membership, is a form of discrimination that is no more justifiable than racism or sexism. Just as we would find it unacceptable to treat someone as inferior because of their race or gender, we should also find it unacceptable to treat animals as inferior simply because they belong to a different species. If we were to examine the arguments often used to justify speciesism, we would find them to be lacking in logical consistency. For example, some may argue that humans are superior to animals because of our higher intelligence or capabilities. However, intelligence alone does not justify the mistreatment of others. If we were to apply this logic consistently, it would mean that those with higher intelligence would be justified in exploiting those with lower intelligence, which we would find morally abhorrent. In considering the ethical treatment of animals, we must focus on their capacity to suffer rather than on any perceived differences in intelligence or abilities. The ability to experience pain and suffering is a fundamental characteristic that all sentient beings share, and it is this capacity that should guide our moral considerations. By recognizing the inherent worth and dignity of all beings who can experience suffering, we can move towards a more compassionate and just society. It is our moral imperative to challenge the unjust discrimination that is perpetuated by speciesism and to strive towards a world where all sentient beings are treated with respect and compassion.
