Fear and propaganda maintain control from "summary" of Animal Farm by George Orwell

Fear is a powerful tool used by those in power to maintain control over the masses. In Animal Farm, the pigs use fear as a means of keeping the other animals in line. They instill fear by creating a sense of impending doom if the animals do not follow their orders. For example, Napoleon, the leader of the pigs, uses the threat of Mr. Jones returning to the farm to scare the animals into submission. This fear keeps the animals in a constant state of anxiety, making them more willing to obey the pigs' commands. Propaganda is another key tool used by the pigs to maintain control over the farm. Squealer, the pig in charge of propaganda, spreads lies and manipulates the truth in order to keep the animals in the dark about the pigs' true intentions. Through propaganda, the pigs are able to control the narrative and shape the animals' beliefs and behaviors. For instance, Squealer convinces the animals that Snowball, a fellow pig who was expelled from the farm, was a traitor and enemy of the farm. By spreading this propaganda, the pigs are able to maintain their grip on power and suppress any dissent among the animals. The combination of fear and propaganda proves to be a potent force in maintaining control over the farm. The pigs use fear to keep the animals obedient and propaganda to manipulate their beliefs and perceptions. This creates a cycle of control where the animals are kept in a constant state of fear and ignorance, unable to challenge the pigs' authority. Through fear and propaganda, the pigs are able to establish and maintain their dominance over the other animals on the farm, solidifying their power and control.
