The animals worked harder than ever, but the fields seemed to grow poorer and poorer. The animals were dismayed to find that the harvest was even smaller than it had been in Mr. Jones's day. Some of the animals whispered that Snowball was to blame for this decline in production. They said that he was sneaking onto the farm at night and sabotaging their efforts. Others blamed the harsh weather or the lack of tools and resources. But whatever the reason, the fact remained that the farm was struggling to produce enough food to feed everyone. The pigs tried to reassure the animals that they were doing everything they could to improve the situation.
