Retreat begins from "summary" of Anabasis by Xenophon
The army, having reached the city of Babylon, found themselves in a difficult situation. The Persians, who had promised them safe passage, were nowhere to be found. With their supplies running low and winter fast approaching, the soldiers knew they had to make a decision. It was then that the generals called a council to discuss their next steps. After much deliberation, it was decided that they would have to retreat. The generals knew this would not be an easy task, as they would have to navigate through hostile territory and face the elements without proper provisions. But they also knew that staying in Babylon would only lead to their demise. And so, the retreat began. The soldiers, although weary and disheartened, marched on with determination. They faced many challenges along the way, from treacherous terrain to enemy attacks. But they pressed on, knowing that their only chance of survival lay in reaching friendly territory. As they made their way through the mountains, the soldiers faced even more hardships. The harsh conditions took a toll on their morale, and many began to question whether they would ever make it out alive. But the generals, leading by example, urged them to stay strong and keep pushing forward. Despite the odds stacked against them, the army continued their retreat. They fought off enemy forces, braved the elements, and overcame countless obstacles. And finally, after many long and grueling days, they reached the safety of friendly territory.- Though battered and worn, had managed to survive against all odds. The retreat, though arduous and challenging, had ultimately saved them from certain destruction. And as they looked back on their journey, they knew that their perseverance and courage had been the key to their survival.
