Anabasis is a classic work of Greek literature, written by the Athenian general and historian Xenophon in 431 BC. It tells the story of the retreat of the Ten Thousand, an army of Greek mercenaries hired by Cyrus the Younger to help him battle his older brother, Artaxerxes II. When Cyrus is killed in battle, the Ten Thousand are left stranded deep in hostile Persian territory and must make their way home. Along the way, they face overwhelming odds, battling barbarian tribes, negotiating treacherous mountain passes, and even engaging in combat with king Artaxerxes' own forces. Through heroic struggle, They ultimately reach the Black Sea, where they are able to board ships and return home. Anabasis is an account of incredible courage and perseverance and is a timeless classic of military literature.
