Society often places unrealistic expectations on parents from "summary" of All Joy and No Fun by Jennifer Senior

It's no secret that parents today are under a tremendous amount of pressure. From the moment a child is born, society bombards parents with a laundry list of expectations, many of which are completely unrealistic. Parents are expected to be perfect in every way – to raise well-behaved, high-achieving children while maintaining a successful career, a happy marriage, and a spotless home. This pressure to excel in every aspect of parenting can be overwhelming. Parents are constantly comparing themselves to others, whether it's the parents at the school gate or the seemingly perfect families on social media. This culture of competition only serves to amplify feelings of inadequacy and guilt. Parents are left feeling like they are never doing enough, like they are constantly falling short of the mark. The truth is, no parent is perfect. Parenting is messy and chaotic and filled with ups and downs. It's a rollercoaster of emotions and challenges, and no amount of striving for perfection will change that. Parents need to give themselves permission to be imperfect, to make mistakes, and to learn from them. It's okay to not have all the answers, to not have it all figured out. Society needs to shift its expectations of parents. Instead of focusing on perfection and achievement, we should be celebrating the small victories, the moments of joy and connection that make parenting worthwhile. Parents should be given the space and support to be themselves, to embrace their flaws and imperfections, and to parent in a way that feels authentic to them. Only then can parents truly find joy in the often thankless and exhausting job of raising children.
