Personal biases can skew decisionmaking from "summary" of Alchemy by Rory Sutherland

Our decisions are not always as rational as we might like to believe. In fact, personal biases can play a significant role in influencing the choices we make. These biases can lead us to make decisions that are not in our best interest or are not based on objective facts. One way in which personal biases can skew decision-making is through the phenomenon of confirmation bias. This is the tendency to seek out information that confirms our preexisting beliefs and to ignore or discount evidence that contradicts them. When we are influenced by confirmation bias, we are more likely to make decisions that align with our existing views, even if those decisions are not the most logical or beneficial. Another way in which personal biases can impact decision-making is through the influence of social proof. This is the tendency to look to others for guidance on how to behave or what choices to make. When we are swayed by social proof, we may make decisions simply because others are doing the same, without considering whether those decisions are truly in our best interest. Emotions can also play a significant role in skewing decision-making. Our emotions can cloud our judgment and lead us to make choices that are driven by fear, anger, or other strong feelings, rather than by logic or reason. When we are in the grip of powerful emotions, we may not be thinking clearly and may make decisions that we later regret.
  1. Personal biases can have a powerful impact on our decision-making processes. By being aware of these biases and taking steps to counteract them, we can make more informed and rational choices that are truly in our best interest.
