Aeneas and his men sailed to the Strophades, islands inhabited by the Harpies, foul creatures with the faces of virgins and the bodies of birds. The Trojans were weary and hungry after their long journey, so they hunted for food on the island. However, as soon as they set up their cooking pots and started to feast on their catch, the Harpies swooped down and polluted the food with their foul stench, leaving behind nothing but a disgusting smell.
