I never expected that my election as president would usher in a post-racial society or eliminate the deep-rooted divisions in our country. The idea of a "more perfect union" has always been aspirational rather than a destination we could definitively reach. Throughout our history, progress has been halting, marked by setbacks and struggles against the forces of bigotry, inequality, and injustice. In my time in office, I sought to push us closer to that ideal, to continue the work of those who came before me and lay the foundation for those who would follow. It was a daunting task, made more difficult by the entrenched interests and entrenched prejudices that stood in the way of change.
