Collaboration is crucial for human problemsolving from "summary" of A Natural History of Human Thinking by Michael Tomasello

Human beings are unique in the way they solve problems. Unlike other species, we rely heavily on collaboration with others to tackle complex challenges. This is because our ability to work together allows us to combine different perspectives, skills, and knowledge in order to come up with innovative solutions. Through collaboration, we are able to pool our cognitive resources and draw upon the collective wisdom of the group. One of the key reasons why collaboration is so crucial for human problem-solving is that it enables us to engage in what Tomasello calls "shared intentionality." This is the ability to jointly focus on a task, coordinate our actions, and share mental representations of the problem at hand. By working together towards a common goal, we are able to synchronize our efforts and achieve outcomes that would be impossible for any one individual to accomplish alone. Moreover, collaboration allows us to benefit from the diverse perspectives and expertise of others. Each person brings their own unique insights and approaches to the table, which can help to uncover hidden solutions and overcome cognitive biases. By engaging in dialogue, debate, and brainstorming with others, we are able to challenge our own assumptions, expand our thinking, and arrive at more creative and effective solutions. Another important aspect of collaboration is the social support and encouragement that it provides. When we work together with others, we feel a sense of camaraderie and solidarity that can boost our motivation, confidence, and resilience in the face of challenges. This sense of belonging and connection can help to alleviate stress, foster trust, and create a positive atmosphere that is conducive to effective problem-solving.
  1. Collaboration is not just a useful strategy for solving problems – it is a fundamental aspect of human cognition and sociality. By working together with others, we are able to harness the power of collective intelligence, creativity, and cooperation. This enables us to tackle complex challenges, generate new ideas, and adapt to changing circumstances more effectively than we ever could on our own.
