Grant Wiggins, the protagonist in 'A Lesson Before Dying', struggles with finding meaning and purpose in his life. He is a disillusioned schoolteacher who believes his existence is devoid of significance. Living in a racially segregated society where African Americans are marginalized, Grant grapples with his own identity and struggles to find his place in the world. Through his interactions with Jefferson, a young black man sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit, Grant begins to question his own beliefs and values.
