Facing unbearable punishments for trivial mistakes was a common occurrence in my world. The slightest error, whether it was spilling milk or not finishing my chores on time, would result in harsh consequences. My mother's reactions were always extreme, disproportionate to the offense committed. She seemed to take pleasure in making me suffer for the smallest infractions, as if it gave her a sense of power and control. The punishments were not just physical but also psychological. The humiliation and degradation I felt after being punished for something as trivial as forgetting to make my bed were almost worse than the pain itself. It was as if my mother was trying to break my spirit, to crush any sense of self-worth I might have had. I never knew what to expect from one day to the next.
