Accepted love and kindness from others from "summary" of A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer

In my darkest hours, when I was on the brink of despair, there were moments of light that shone through the darkness. It was in those rare moments that I was able to catch a glimpse of what it felt like to be loved and cared for by someone other than myself. These moments were fleeting, like a gentle breeze that soothed my battered soul before disappearing once again into the abyss. I remember the first time Mrs. Moss, my school nurse, showed me a kindness that I had never experienced before. She looked into my eyes with a warmth that I had never known, and her gentle touch on my shoulder sent shivers down my spine. In that moment, I felt a glimmer of hope that there was still goodness in the world, even if it was just a tiny sliver. As I stood there, basking in the warmth of Mrs. Moss's kindness, I realized that I had been starving for love and affection for so long that I had forgotten what it felt like to be treated with compassion. It was like a long-lost memory that had suddenly resurfaced, bringing with it a flood of emotions that I had long buried deep within myself. In those moments of acceptance and kindness from others, I felt a sense of peace wash over me, as if I had finally found a safe harbor in the storm of my life. It was a feeling that I clung to desperately, like a drowning man grasping for a life raft in the vast ocean. And even though those moments were few and far between, they sustained me and gave me the strength to carry on, to survive another day in a world that was cold and cruel. Looking back now, I realize that those moments of love and kindness from others were like a lifeline that kept me from sinking into the abyss of despair. They were the small sparks of light that guided me through the darkness, leading me towards a glimmer of hope that one day, things would get better. And even though I was battered and broken, those moments gave me the strength to keep going, to keep fighting for a better future, no matter how distant it seemed.
