In the society depicted in "1984", the ruling Party exercises total control over every aspect of its citizens' lives. The Party's slogan, "War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength", is a prime example of the Party's distortion of reality and manipulation of language to maintain power. The Party's Thought Police monitor citizens for any signs of dissent or independent thought, using surveillance and propaganda to ensure conformity. Citizens are subjected to constant surveillance through telescreens in their homes and public spaces, reinforcing the Party's control over their actions and even their innermost thoughts.
