By promoting doublethink, the Party ensures that its citizens are unable to think critically or question the Party's authority. Through doublethink, the Party is able to manipulate reality and distort the truth. For example, the Party claims that war is peace, freedom is slavery, and ignorance is strength. By convincing the people to believe these contradictory statements, the Party is able to maintain its control over them. The citizens of Oceania are constantly bombarded with propaganda that promotes doublethink.
