In the social hierarchy, there is a distinction between those who take action and those who are perceived to take action. The former are the true movers and shakers of the world, the ones who make things happen, while the latter are merely concerned with appearances. It is easy to fall into the trap of being more concerned with how we are seen by others rather than actually doing meaningful work. When we focus solely on how we are perceived, we are engaging in a form of deception, both to ourselves and to those around us. We are pretending to be something we are not, putting on a facade of productivity without actually accomplishing anything of substance.
