Do not pursue what is expedient at the cost of the meaningful from "summary" of 12 Rules for Life by Jordan B. Peterson

Life is a series of choices, some simple and mundane, others complex and profound. We are often faced with the decision between what is expedient and what is meaningful. The expedient choice is the easy one, the one that offers immediate gratification or relief. It is the path of least resistance, the quick fix, the shortcut. The meaningful choice, on the other hand, requires effort, sacrifice, and delayed gratification. It is the choice that aligns with our values, our goals, our purpose. It is the choice that leads to growth, fulfillment, and ultimately, a meaningful life. Choosing what is expedient over what is meaningful may seem like the easy choice in the short term, but it comes at a cost. When we consistently prioritize what is expedient, we sacrifice our long-term well-being, our sense of purpose, our integrity. We may experience temporary pleasure or relief, but it is fleeting and hollow. We may avoid discomfort or difficulty, but we stagnate and fail to reach our full potential. We may take the path of least resistance, but we miss out on the growth and transformation that come from facing challenges and overcoming obstacles. In the grand scheme of things, what is expedient is often insignificant, while what is meaningful is enduring and profound. It is the difference between instant gratification and lasting fulfillment, between shallow pleasures and deep satisfaction. It is the choice between living a life of mediocrity and living a life of purpose and meaning. When we choose what is expedient at the cost of the meaningful, we sell ourselves short, settling for less than we are capable of, less than we deserve. To live a meaningful life, we must be willing to forego the easy, comfortable, and convenient in favor of the difficult, uncomfortable, and challenging. We must be willing to make sacrifices, to persevere through adversity, to embrace uncertainty and discomfort. We must be willing to take risks, to step outside our comfort zone, to confront our fears and insecurities. We must be willing to do what is right, not just what is easy, to pursue our values and goals with passion and commitment. In the end, the choice between what is expedient and what is meaningful is a choice between a life of complacency and a life of purpose. It is a choice between settling for mediocrity and striving for excellence. It is a choice between fleeting pleasure and lasting fulfillment. It is a choice between taking the easy way out and
