When we talk about compassion and kindness, we are not talking about being kind just to others. We should also be kind to ourselves. This may sound simple, but it is not always easy to do. We tend to be very hard on ourselves, always pushing ourselves to be better, to do more. But this constant striving can be exhausting and unhealthy. We need to learn to treat ourselves with the same kindness and compassion that we would show to a friend in need. When we are kind and compassionate towards ourselves, we are better able to extend that kindness and compassion to others. It is like the saying, "You can't pour from an empty cup." We need to take care of ourselves first so that we have the energy and capacity to care for others.
