Be present and attentive in each moment from "summary" of Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind by Shunryu Suzuki
To be present and attentive in each moment is the essence of Zen practice. When we engage fully with whatever we are doing, whether it is sitting in meditation, washing the dishes, or talking with a friend, we are embodying the true spirit of Zen. It is about being fully immersed in the present moment, without getting caught up in thoughts of the past or worries about the future. By being fully present in each moment, we can experience a sense of clarity and peace that transcends our usual state of mind. This is what is meant by having a "beginner's mind" – approaching each moment with an open and curious attitude, free from preconceptions and judgments. When we let go of our fixed ideas and expectations, we can see things as they truly are, without distortion. Being present and attentive in each moment is not about striving for perfection or achieving some ideal state of being. It is simply about being fully engaged with whatever is happening right now, without trying to change or control it. This is where true freedom lies – in accepting things as they are, without resistance. In Zen practice, we cultivate this quality of presence and attentiveness through meditation and mindfulness. By bringing our awareness to our breath, our body, or our surroundings, we can train ourselves to stay grounded in the present moment, no matter what distractions or challenges may arise.- Being present and attentive in each moment is a practice that can transform our lives. It can help us to let go of our attachments and fears, and to find a deeper sense of connection and meaning in everything we do. It is a simple yet profound way of being that can bring a sense of joy and fulfillment to our daily lives.
