Write for yourself first, others second from "summary" of Zen in the Art of Writing by Ray Bradbury

When you sit down to write, remember this: Do not write with the purpose of pleasing others. Write for yourself first, and let that be your guiding principle. Your writing must come from within, from your own desires, your own passions, your own experiences. It is only when you write for yourself that your words will be authentic, powerful, and compelling. Writing for others, on the other hand, is a trap that many writers fall into. They try to anticipate what their readers want, what will sell, what will impress. But this approach is doomed to failure. Your writing will lack heart and soul if you are constantly trying to please others. Your words will ring hollow, and your readers will sense that. When you write for yourself, you tap into a deep well of creativity and emotion. You are free to explore your own thoughts and feelings without constraint. Your writing becomes a reflection of who you are, what you believe, what you dream. And this authenticity will resonate with your readers in a way that pandering to them never could. Of course, this is not to say that you should ignore your audience completely. It is important to consider your readers' needs and interests. But this should not be your primary concern. Your first obligation is to yourself – to your own voice, your own vision, your own truth. Trust in yourself, trust in your instincts, and trust that your writing will find its audience. So the next time you sit down to write, remember: Write for yourself first, others second. Write from the heart, write with passion, write with honesty. Your words will be all the more powerful for it.
