Changing habits can rewire the brain from "summary" of Your Brain Is Playing Tricks on You by Albert Moukheiber

Our brains have a remarkable ability to adapt and change, a concept known as neuroplasticity. This means that our habits and behaviors can actually rewire our brains over time. When we repeatedly engage in a certain behavior, whether it's a healthy habit like exercise or a detrimental one like smoking, our brains create neural pathways that make it easier for us to perform that behavior in the future. This is because our brains are constantly seeking efficiency, looking for ways to conserve energy and resources. So, the more we engage in a behavior, the stronger the neural pathways associated with that behavior become. This is why breaking old habits can be so challenging - we have literally wired our brains to make it easier for us to continue those habits. However, the good news is that we can use this same principle to our advantage by intentionally creating new habits that serve us better. By consistently engaging in a new behavior, we can forge new neural pathways that make it easier for us to continue that behavior in the future. Over time, these new habits can become as automatic and ingrained as our old habits, leading to lasting changes in our behavior. For example, if you want to start exercising regularly, you can start by committing to going for a walk every day. As you continue this behavior, your brain will begin to create new neural pathways associated with exercise, making it easier for you to stick to your routine. Eventually, exercise will become a natural and automatic part of your day, thanks to the power of neuroplasticity. So, the next time you find yourself struggling to break a bad habit or start a new one, remember that your brain has the remarkable ability to change and adapt. By consistently engaging in the behaviors you want to cultivate, you can rewire your brain and create lasting change in your life.
