Routines become automatic through practice from "summary" of Your Brain at Work by David Rock

When we repeatedly perform a series of actions, our brains form neural pathways that make those actions easier to execute. This process is known as automaticity, and it is what allows us to carry out tasks without having to consciously think about each step. Take driving a car, for example. When we first learn to drive, we have to pay close attention to everything - adjusting the mirrors, using the turn signals, checking blind spots. But with practice, these actions become so ingrained that we can do them almost effortlessly. Automaticity is a result of the brain's ability to streamline processes through repeated practice. When we perform a task over and over again, our brains become more efficient at carrying out that task.
