Insight emerges from relaxation from "summary" of Your Brain at Work by David Rock

When we are fully relaxed, our brain is able to make connections between seemingly unrelated pieces of information. This is because the brain's default mode network, which is responsible for insight generation, becomes more active when we are at rest. When we are stressed or anxious, on the other hand, the brain's executive network takes over, focusing on immediate tasks and preventing us from seeing the bigger picture. Insight, which is the sudden realization of a solution to a problem, emerges when the brain is allowed to wander freely. This is why many people report having their best ideas in the shower or while taking a walk. These activities provide the necessary relaxation for the brain to make novel connections and come up with creative solutions. By intentionally taking breaks throughout the day and allowing ourselves to relax, we can increase the likelihood of having insights. This can be as simple as going for a short walk or meditating for a few minutes. These moments of relaxation give our brain the space it needs to form new connections and generate fresh ideas. In a work context, it is important to create an environment that allows for relaxation and downtime. This can involve scheduling regular breaks, encouraging employees to take vacations, or providing spaces for quiet reflection. By prioritizing relaxation, organizations can foster a culture of creativity and innovation.
  1. Insight emerges from relaxation because it is during these moments of rest that our brain is able to make the connections necessary for creative problem-solving. By recognizing the importance of downtime and intentionally creating opportunities for relaxation, we can unlock our full potential and come up with new and innovative ideas.
