Feedback influences neural circuits from "summary" of Your Brain at Work by David Rock

The concept that feedback influences neural circuits is a fascinating one. Essentially, this means that the feedback we receive - whether positive or negative - can actually impact the way our brain functions. Neuroscientists have discovered that when we receive feedback, it triggers a response in the brain that can lead to changes in neural circuitry. When we receive positive feedback, our brain releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward. This dopamine release strengthens the neural pathways associated with the behavior that led to the positive feedback. In other words, positive feedback helps to reinforce certain behaviors by strengthening the neural connections involved. Conversely, when we receive negative feedback, it can trigger the release of cortisol, a stress hormone. Cortisol can inhibit the functioning of the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for decision-making and self-regulation. This can make it harder for us to learn from our mistakes and adapt our behavior accordingly. Feedback can also influence our perception of the world around us. For example, if we receive positive feedback on a task, we are more likely to view similar tasks in a positive light. On the other hand, if we receive negative feedback, we may start to see similar tasks as more challenging or daunting.
  1. The concept that feedback influences neural circuits highlights the intricate relationship between our external environment and our internal cognitive processes. By understanding how feedback impacts our brain function, we can begin to harness its power to improve our learning, decision-making, and overall well-being.
