Society's expectations of women can be suffocating and unrealistic from "summary" of Wow, No Thank You. by Samantha Irby

It’s like there’s a handbook somewhere that dictates how women are supposed to act and look and think, and if you deviate even a little bit, you’re met with side-eye and judgment. It’s exhausting, trying to live up to these impossible standards that society has set for us. We’re expected to be perfect mothers, wives, daughters, and friends all at once, while also looking flawless and maintaining a successful career. It’s like we’re not allowed to have flaws or make mistakes - we must always be smiling and accommodating, no matter what life throws at us. And don’t even get me started on the whole aging thing. It’s like once you hit a certain age, society decides you’re no longer worthy of attention or respect. We’re bombarded with anti-aging products and messages telling us that wrinkles and gray hairs are the enemy, that we must fight against the natural process of getting older. It’s ridiculous - why can’t we just embrace our age and all the wisdom and experience that comes with it? But it’s not just about our physical appearance - society also places unrealistic expectations on our behavior and emotions. We’re supposed to be nurturing and caring, always putting others before ourselves. We’re expected to be soft and gentle, never showing anger or aggression. It’s like we’re not allowed to have our own thoughts and feelings - we must always conform to what society deems acceptable for women. But you know what? I’m tired of playing by these rules. I refuse to be suffocated by society’s expectations of who I should be. I’m going to embrace my flaws and imperfections, and I’m going to live my life on my own terms. I refuse to be held back by unrealistic standards that were never meant for me in the first place. I am enough, just as I am. And any man, woman, or society that tries to tell me otherwise can kindly see themselves out.
