Selfdeprecating humor can be a coping mechanism for anxiety from "summary" of Wow, No Thank You. by Samantha Irby
Self-deprecating humor is my go-to coping mechanism when my anxiety is at its peak. When I feel overwhelmed by the weight of the world, I find solace in making fun of myself. It's like a shield I put up to protect myself from the harsh realities of life. By making jokes at my own expense, I am able to take some of the power away from my anxiety. I use humor as a way to lighten the heavy burdens that anxiety brings. It's a way for me to acknowledge my struggles without letting them consume me. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, I choose to laugh at the absurdity of it all. It's my way of saying, "Yes, life is hard, but I refuse to let it crush me."
Through self-deprecating humor, I am able to create a sense of camaraderie with others who may be going through similar struggles. By showing my vulnerabilities and insecurities, I invite others to do the same. It's a way of saying, "Hey, we're all in this together. Let's laugh at our pain and find strength in our shared experiences."
While some may see self-deprecating humor as a sign of weakness, I see it as a sign of resilience. It takes courage to be able to laugh at yourself in the face of adversity. It's a way of reclaiming control over your own narrative and refusing to let anxiety define you. So, the next time you see me cracking jokes at my own expense, know that it's not a cry for help, but a declaration of strength.
