From a young age, boys are often encouraged to assert themselves and negotiate for what they want. Whether it's asking for a raise in allowance or speaking up in class, boys are taught that it's okay to be assertive and go after what they desire. They are praised for being confident and taking charge of situations, reinforcing the idea that negotiation is a natural part of life. On the other hand, girls are often socialized to be accommodating and avoid conflict. They are taught to be polite, agreeable, and not to rock the boat. When girls do assert themselves or negotiate, they may be labeled as bossy or aggressive, which can deter them from engaging in negotiation in the future. Society sends girls the message that it's not feminine to be assertive or to ask for what they want, leading to a lack of confidence when it comes to negotiating.
