Forgiveness is a form of selfcare from "summary" of Wild (Oprah's Book Club 2.0 Digital Edition) by Cheryl Strayed

Forgiveness is a form of selfcare. It's a way of taking care of ourselves that can feel surprisingly hard, because it involves letting go of the comfortable, familiar feelings of anger and resentment that have become like old friends. There's a reason why the decision to forgive can be so difficult, and it's because holding onto those negative emotions can feel like a way of protecting ourselves. When we're angry at someone, when we feel wronged or hurt by them, that anger can feel like a shield, a way of keeping ourselves safe from further harm. But the truth is, holding onto anger and resentment doesn't really protect us. In fact, it does just the opposite - it keeps us trapped in a cycle of negativity that can be draining and destructive. It takes a lot of energy to hold onto those negative emotions, and that energy could be better spent on taking care of ourselves in healthier, more productive ways. Forgiveness is a way of reclaiming that energy, of freeing ourselves from the burden of anger and resentment so that we can move forward with our lives. Forgiveness is also a way of honoring ourselves and our own worth. When we forgive someone who has wronged us, we're not saying that what they did was okay, or that we're okay with being treated that way. Instead, we're saying that we value ourselves enough to let go of the hurt and pain that someone else has caused us. We're saying that we deserve to be free from the weight of anger and resentment, that we deserve to be at peace with ourselves and our past. In the end, forgiveness is a form of selfcare because it allows us to take care of ourselves in a way that is both compassionate and empowering. It's a way of freeing ourselves from the negative emotions that hold us back, and of reclaiming our own sense of worth and dignity. Through forgiveness, we can let go of the past and embrace the future with open hearts and open minds.
